Takeoff
Estimators have the option of using paper plans, digital plans (PDF, TIF, GIF, and JPEG) or CAD Files. No more calculators, slide rules, or planimeters, instead, the Takeoff is a simple matter of tracing over your existing design surfaces. You’ll have access to several different takeoff tools that enable you to easily calculate cut and fill quantities, apply boring information and sub base depths. Earthwork also handles multiple sheets, and works with any known scale.

Area
In Earthwork, an area is a section of your job site for which you plan to calculate cut and fill totals-like the site perimeter, job phase, or special construction areas like building pads, retention ponds and parking lots. Digitizing areas works the same way as digitizing contours—once for your existing layer, and once more for the proposed layer. Here you can raise or lower the elevations in an area, and strip or replace topsoil.

Trench
Underground utilities of any type can be calculated by applying trench profiles, pipe diameters, and bedding type and depth. Earthworks’ summary window will generate accurate excavation, bedding volume, backfill, and spoil volumes. Users can also apply depth ranges to easily calculate length of trench within a predetermined depth range.

Length/each
Quickly measure kerb lengths, count pits, or man holes using Earthworks measuring tools. All measured items will show dimensions on screen with a color or symbol selected. Earthworks’ summary window will total quantities under like descriptions.

3D
The 3D view gives you a realistic, birds-eye perspective of your existing and proposed topographic view. You can rotate the view so that you’re seeing your site from almost any angle; then zoom in for extra detail or zoom out to get the big picture. Color-code your 3D view by elevation or cut and fill amounts. And of course, the Flyby feature takes you on a guided tour of the site, at the altitude and speed you select.

Section
The Section view gives estimators a cross section image of elevations between any two points on the site. The station intervals are completely customizable—set it as high or low as you need. What’s more, your sections are not limited to straight lines—you can generate profiles consisting of any number of points, create long sections of roadworks or area perimeters.

Grid
The Grid view displays elevations and cut / fill amounts in a gridded format. Choose any pre-defined area to view, like site perimeters, phases or special construction areas. You’ll see totals for both cut and fill, with the net amount available in the corner. You can even turn off contours, or enable color-coding for viewing cut and fill areas on site.

Summary
The Summary screen shows a complete breakdown of cut and fill quantities, totaled at the top with breakdowns. Breakdowns are displayed by area and layer (existing and proposed), and include the measured quantity, swell/yield factors, and adjusted total quantity. Additionally, Earthwork’s Balance feature enables you to balance your entire site in just a few seconds.

Layout
Share information about your job site with the guys in the field. With the Layout window, you can offset and stake lines in either the proposed or existing layer and generate staking reports. From there, it’s easy to export your staking report to a data file that can be loaded by a GPS or laser total station.
